The USMNT January camp was announced Friday and three Real Salt Lake players made the cut.
Nick Rimando, Kyle Beckerman and … Luis Gil accepted the call to train with the national team.
Rimando is a lock to make the World Cup roster (barring injury), and this camp is just a chance to train and prepare with Jurgen Klinsmann. Beckerman is likely to make the squad. This call-up will give Salt Lake’s dreadlocked captain a chance to solidify his ticket to Brazil.
For Gil, this is a new experience. It is a chance to spend some time with Klinsmann and start building a resume for the 2018 campaign.
Finally, for Tony Beltran this snub has to be a disappointment. After earning his first cap with the national team, Beltran surely had to hope he’d get another shot in January’s camp. But a poor end to this season probably doomed his hopes.
Beltran isn’t out of the national team picture completely. But this snub certainly serves notice that he needs to do more if he wants more opportunities to represent the red, white, and blue.
